Buy yourself roses!

Sunday, December 23, 2012

I bought a dozen of the most beautiful roses I've ever seen.  They are a breathtaking yellow, with a fire orange on the tips. I never wait for someone to buy me flowers, I buy them for myself.

There's nothing like demonstrating your love for yourself, by giving yourself roses.  My daughters  absolutely love them. My mom loves the color, and; I love the life they breathe into a room.

Even if you can afford just one perfect rose, don't view flowers for yourself as an extravagance; make them a way of life.

Feli's Favorites - Black Truffle Oil!

Monday, December 17, 2012

One of the things I love to do, is to take ordinary things, and make them extraordinary.  It's so easy to stick to what's tried and true.  Why not shake things up a bit?

One of my new favorite things is black truffle oil.  If you like mashed potatoes, try them with black truffle oil; Mashed Potatoes-zilla!

We ordered a pizza the other day, and I put just a few drops on my slice; it was electric!  Black truffle oil may be common to some, but to me it is a newly discovered treasure.

Make sure you only use this on your finished meal.  Don't cook with it darlings, because, heating this oil can destroy the delicate flavor.  Bon appétit

Congratulations!!!!

Tisha D just won the Kindle!!!!!!!!

Her response was: Simplicity. I have made a commitment to reduce/eliminate my life of the physical and mental baggage that has been weighing me down, a process called de-cluttering. The initial steps to feeling light and liberated. Ridding myself of this stagnant energy thereby removing it from my life in order to free up time and space for the more important things. A simple life creates the path for my luxurious life.....
I loved all the responses, and I plan to incorporate them into my life.  These are all incredible people.  Thank you so much.

Stay tuned for Feli's next big announcement!

The Gift of Fragrance!

Saturday, November 24, 2012

Today my daughter gave me a wonderful gift.  She gave me a mini bottle of Versace Bright Crystal!  I love this fragrance.  It's light, but it's not too sweet.  It's great for the office.  I love that she was able to get me a present that she'd know I liked and for such a great price.  Her allowance is limited, so buying a mini fragrance was perfect, about $11.  Thank you sweetheart!

Artisanal Chocolates by Christopher Elbow

Tuesday, November 20, 2012

Sometimes, nothing else will make me happy, but chocolate.  At the end of the day, or the beginning or middle of the day; there's nothing like a Reese's cup.  However, I have discovered something even more wonderful.

Christopher Elbow, makes the most surprising, exotic chocolates.  Christopher's confections are as beautiful as they are delicious.  He has blended flavors like Tequila Lime (a white chocolate ganache infused with fresh lime and anejo tequila), Passion Fruit (caramel made with tropical passion fruit), Champagne (Moet and Chandon Champagne enter twined with dark and milk chocolate) and, Butterscotch Bourbon (brown sugar caramel married to Kentucky Bourbon).

This is chocolate is meant to be savored slowly, because it's more than chocolate, it's an experience.  I hope you love it as much as it do!

Easy Indulgence #1 - Popsicle toes

Monday, November 19, 2012

One thing I love about fall, is that I can wear any crazy color on my toes that I want, and; no one has to know.  It's like having a little secret.  I love pale green, limoncello, and iridescent baby blue.  However, when I'm wearing sandals, sometimes I feel compelled to stick to the old faithful (read: boring) french manicure.

I've decided to celebrate fall, by getting some fall colors to wear on my toes.  You should do it too!  Go out and buy nail polish in a color you've never been brave enough to wear.  Paint your toes in that wicked, brazen color.  No one has to know you've got pink glitter toes!
If you're feeling really crazy, paint each of your toes a different color.  Now, you've got Popsicle toes!

Adieu Feli Viens Ici et bonjour Feli's Luxurious Life

The name of this blog has changed to Feli's Luxurious Life.  I adore the name FeliViensIci, but no one could pronounce it, ha!

Feli's Luxurious Life goes hand in hand with my new book:  The Luxurious Life Of The Single Mom.

Thanks for being on this journey with me.

My New Book - The Luxurious LIfe Of The Single Mom!

I'm so excited about my new book!  My book is all about living beautifully.  It's the same message I want to get across here on this blog.  It doesn't matter, how much money you have, or; don't have.  Living well is not represented by your income, it's comes from your attitude.

We all know people who seem to "have it all", yet they are miserable.  That's not the life I want for myself, and, those that I love.  I need to experience the joy in life, and really see it for it's possibilities.  I need to help others to discover this joy for themselves.

I would be honored if you read my book.  Please tell me what you think of it!

It's The Weekend - You Have Permission To Rest!

Friday, October 19, 2012

It's so interesting to me, how people spend their weekends.  Some people cram in scores of activities, and projects, so much so; that they need a weekend to rest up from their weekend.

Occasionally, I have a non-stop weekend, but; I really don't like them.  I get that sick feeling in my stomach on Sunday, when I've squandered my weekend; without giving myself time to recuperate from the previous week.

Hey, I get it.  We are busy people, busy people get things done...yadda yadda yadda.  Don't get me wrong, it's great to have the feeling of accomplishment that comes with completing a project, organizing your closet; or finishing some other long-deferred task.

However, it's important to be balanced and know when to stop and recharge.  Be busy doing the right things, and, understand that there is a time and place for everything.  Learn to say no, to yourself and others.  Do you have to run non-stop every weekend?  Can you carve out a weekend or two just for yourself?  Only you can answer that.

I saw this gorgeous couch in the window at Restoration Hardware.  So now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to plop down on it with a good book.  Okay, maybe not that couch, but a tolerable facsimile thereof, and; you have my permission to do the same.  Now give yourself permission, and have a wonderful weekend!

Exercise Can Be Luxurious!

Thursday, October 18, 2012

I know I should exercise more.  I see all those industrious souls running and sweating; and I know I'll be in that zone eventually.  I can't wait to feel the motivation to exercise, otherwise; I'll never work out.  I just need be determined to get out there.

Most of the time, I feel too tired or lazy, to throw on work out clothes and bust a move, so; I don't.  However, I've have a luxurious alternative.

I have found that I would rather just wear comfortable clothes and shoes all the time, and go for an impromptu walk whenever I can.  I'm taking my queue from all those cool Manhattan girls I see on my trips to New York.  Many of those women, use the subway and then walk to get to work.  They wear comfy clothes, and walkable shoes, then; they hit the pavement.  It's not a big deal to them, it's just a part of their life.

So, rather than ceremoniously changing from my work clothes into work out clothes, I wear cozy clothes and sensible shoes.  I find myself taking the stairs more often and wandering a bit more.  When your feet are hurting you don't deviate from the beaten path very often.  Sensible shoes aren't the cutest shoes but, they are a small price to pay for better health, and; more enjoyment of life.

I love taking walks.  I recently went to the park and walked, looking at all the beautiful fall scenery.  I was delighted!  I got a shot of these beautiful flowers.  Enjoy them, and get out there!

Get Your Beauty Sleep!

Wednesday, October 17, 2012

The last few nights, I've been going to bed after midnight.  That is so not good for me.  I typically require 8 hours every night.  Going to bed at 12:00 a.m. and waking up at 7:00 a.m. doesn't work.

Did you know that there are optimal bedtimes?  That means that going to bed at a certain time, aligns with your body's internal clock.  In other words, going to bed at 1:00 a.m. and getting up at 8:00 a.m., isn't as beneficial as going to bed earlier, and; getting the same seven hours you need.

If you don't get enough sleep, it may increase the hormone Cortisol.  Cortisol is a sly little bugger that can break down tissue.  That leaves you with sagging skin, lines, and wrinkles.  Not to mention over time, lack of sleep can cause depression and affect your memory. Ouch!

Wow!  Okay, you had me at "wrinkles".  Tonight, I'm going to bed on time.  I can't wait; I'm exhausted!

Death's Door Gin

Tuesday, October 16, 2012

I think I'm a little scared to try this, but it's a really funny name.  Actually, according to their site, these spirits take their name from the body of water between Door County peninsula and Washington Island from which they get organic hard red winter wheat to make their vodka, gin and white whisky.

Potowatami and Winnebego tribesmen originally named the waterway, while the French called it Port de Morts when trading in the area to ward off other traders.

That's your history lesson for today.  Put a smile on your face, and have a wonderful day darlings!

Pedicures - Are Not An Option

Monday, October 15, 2012

I used to believe that being a free single woman meant not being required to shave my legs every day.  I also believed that pedicures were not mandatory.  No man = no pedi.

However, I've realized that keeping myself properly groomed has nothing to do with a man.  My legs and feet must be soft and pampered for my own pleasure.  Giving yourself a pedicure is an idea, albeit not a fun idea.

I would much rather treat myself to a visit to the salon, letting someone else massage, and; polish for me.

I really love a french manicure on my toes.  However, I love to polish my toes in a unexpected, whimsical color like pink glitter or gold.  When I paint my toes in rainbow or Popsicle colors, it's like a little secret.  My fingers are ultra-conservative for the office, but my toes are any one's guess!

Candles

Friday, October 12, 2012

I have always loved candles.  At a previous home of mine, our fireplace had been sealed off.  The alcove was still there, but, no fire could be lit.  So, I decided to buy a gorgeous candelabra and set it inside the alcove.  It held about seven candles, and, I lit every one.
It was amazing how my daughters would softly creep into the room, sit down on the floor, and just soak in all that wonderful firelight.  Everything always seemed so tranquil, when I lit those candles.  Of course, we moved around, and eventually we went about our evening.  But, it was the quiet way we did it when we lit candles.  It was like, no one wanted to break the stillness of the evening.
Even now, my daughters love to light candles when we have dinner.  I find that it does indeed inspire peaceful conversation, something I desperately need after a long day at work.
My new favorite candles are from Marcus Allen.   http://www.marcusalan.com/.  Try Amber or Coconut Creme.  I especially love the packaging.  Let me know what you think of them.  Enjoy!

Weep No More Sad Fountains - I love this piece. Enjoy!

Monday, October 1, 2012

Weep you no more, sad fountains;

What need you flow so fast?

Look how the snowy mountains

Heaven's sun doth gently waste.

But my sun's heavenly eyes

View not your weeping,

That now lies sleeping

Softly, softly, now softly lies

Sleeping.

Sleep is a reconciling,

A rest that peace begets:

Doth not the sun rise smiling

When fair at even he sets?

Rest you then, rest, sad eyes,

Melt not in weeping,

While she lies sleeping

Softly, softly, now softly lies

Sleeping

Pashmina - Wrap It Like a Diva!

Friday, September 7, 2012

A friend gave me some great feedback about my clothing.  She told me to stop wearing so much black.  You see, I LOVE to wear black.  Black is simple, but, it's also theatrical.  I don't have to match shades because, after all, black goes with black.  It's too much work trying to coordinate my shoes, and my purse, with my outfit.  Besides, I'm color matching impaired.

However, since feedback is a gift, I've decided to move toward a more vivid palette.  Not too much, I don't want to feel extremely conspicuous.  I'm not going to wear a monochromatic outfit; like a blue dress with blue shoes and a blue purse.  I'd feel like that girl the Oompa Loompa's rolled out of Willie Wonka's factory.

I found out, that a trick is to add just a pop of color.  A pashmina is a great way to infuse color into your outfit, without the commitment of buying an entire dress or suit in an unfamiliar, or, uncomfortable color.  I find that I can comfortably wear a scarf, or a pashmina, in a color that is very different from my normal preference.  Scarves are also a great way to beef up a limited wardrobe without a large investment.  Now, find a gorgeous pashmina, and wrap it like a diva!

Take Yourself to Dinner

Thursday, August 23, 2012

On the occasion of our third anniversary, my late husband, and I went to L'Antibes; a delightful french restaurant, tucked away in the Short North area of Columbus, Ohio.  After my husband's death, I had made a point to visit spots that he and I experienced.

L'Antibes was a particularly happy memory for me, so, I couldn't bring myself to step foot in that place again.  It had been 15 years since I'd visited that restaurant.  One evening, on a whim, I went to back to L'Antibes.  I'm sure I could have gone with a friend, but, I felt that it was too personal to be shared.  I wanted to feel whatever I felt, without feeling the need to explain myself.

I was lead to a good table, but, I chose a cozy table in the back.  The owner of the establishment came over to greet me.  I was immediately put at ease.  This place was still just as friendly as it was before.  It promised to be a great experience with an interesting mix of insanely good food; and a warm and inviting staff.
The waiter brought over a demitasse cup of carrot soup.  I don't like cooked carrots, so, I was wary of the innocuous looking little sampling.  I took a sip, and it instantly transported me back to my childhood in France.  I didn't have a childhood in France, so, I have no idea what that was about.  However, the soup was rich and sublime.

My entree consisted of Beef Short Ribs that were deliciously tender and complex, a velvety Black Truffle Potato Mousseline, Brussels Sprouts, and Shiitake Ragout.  As a rule, I DO NOT eat brussels sprouts.  I don't know how they did it, but, those brussels sprouts were so flavorful; absolutely delicious!

For dessert I had a Chocolate Torte, with Raspberry Sauce, a delicate Honey Whipped Cream, Bee Pollen - actual bee pollen.  The torte was dark, but, it was playful.  The chef at L'Antibes is absolutely brillant, and; the setting is warm and romantic.  http://www.lantibes.com/

The lesson I learned from that night is not to cease to live your life.  If you don't have someone with whom to experience all life has, experience it by yourself!  Darlings, bottom line, carry on a love affair with yourself!

Today's fragrance.....

Wednesday, August 22, 2012

The Little Things Can Save Your Life

Tuesday, August 21, 2012

I was shopping at Staples yesterday buying school supplies for the kids.  The cashier was really nice, so, I started a conversation with her.  I'm turning into my mother!  I digress.  She said that she was a single mom, working two jobs; "living the dream".

Speaking with her, made me think about the scores of people, working so hard to provide for their families.  After providing for others, they don't have much left for themselves, emotionally; or materially.

Fortunately, the Staples cashier still had her sparkle and a lovely smile.  Sometimes, however, this world can leave you feeling broken.  My cure for that has been gratitude.  Being grateful for little things, can show you how rich you are.

Life can be like uninspiring.  However, you can discipline yourself to pause to experience life's subtle beauties.

If you live in an urban setting, stop to marvel at the flowers that grow stubbornly amidst the concrete and gravel.  If you are beaten down, close your eyes when your child kisses you.  Put your cheek against their velvety soft face, and give thanks for them.  Look forward to the little things.  You'll find you got a lot to live for.

Cheap perfume is worse than no perfume

Friday, August 10, 2012

A woman must wear fragrance.  Gucci Guilty and Versace Bright Crystal are some of my favorites.  Fragrance is something in which you have to invest.  Cheap perfume is worse than no perfume.

Unfortunately, we don't always have $60 to invest in fragrance.  Fortunately, there's hope.  I get my fragrances from Fragrance Net.  I order mini's of my favorites and save a ton.  Just click on my link to the right, and look for your favorite fragrance, or; try a new scent.  Darlings, at these prices, you can afford to experiment!

Today, I'm wearing Light Blue from Dolce and Gabbana.  Tomorrow, I'll try something else.  It just proves that you don't have to be rich, be smart!

If a ballotin is too expensive for you, get one of their chocolate lollipops; so you don't break the bank.

Darlings, you deserve chocolate...good chocolate!  Le chocolat est la vie!

What The Heck Is A Viens Ici?

What the heck is a viens ici (veens icky) you ask?  In French it means "come here".  Get it?  I knew you would.  Now, how to pronounce it.  That's the tricky part.  Here's a quick french lesson. Washing Your Face Can Be Luxurious

Tuesday, July 31, 2012

Have you ever seen those commercials where the woman is washing her face in slow motion.  Her skin looks so amazing.  The water splashing seems so refreshing.  Then the camera cuts to the woman patting her face with a towel.  Clearly, she has on a face full of foundation and concealer.  Of course, they skip over that.

We may not look like the models in commercials, and; that's okay.  We can still find luxury in something as commonplace as washing our face.  If you are like me, however, you may take a bar of soap and; rub it up against your face in the shower while you're hosing off.

Let's decide to delight in small things, and, take time for ourselves.  Carefully choose what you use on your skin.  Look at the ingredients carefully, and try to choose a regimen that you will stick to.  Remember darlings, time is marching on, and, it's marching all over your face.

The Artistry Of Femininity - Lesson 4

Monday, July 30, 2012

A lady let's others finish what they are saying, before she speaks. This lesson is really challenging for me.

I'm always thinking about two sentences ahead of someone I'm speaking to.  Apparently, that's...bad.  If you want to be a lady, you have to actually listen to what others are saying.   Who knew?

Glass Sculpture

Sunday, July 29, 2012

Recently, my kids were invited to a  sleepover.  Darlings, I rarely have moments of complete solitude.  In true mommy fashion, I share most of my time with my kids.
You would think I felt liberated, and, ready for a little "me" time. Actually, I didn't. I felt a little sad.
However, rather than horking down a bag of Cheetos, and a pint of ice cream feeling sorry for myself; I spent that rainy afternoon wandering around the downtown museum.
It was so nice, to be quiet; alone with my thoughts.  It felt great to take time for myself, without guilt.
This is one of my favorite glass sculptures. The artist is Dale Chihuly.  This piece was inaccessible the day I went, but, I still managed to get a shot of it from a distance. To see more from this artist, go to http://www.chihuly.com/, and enjoy!  Love you!

French In One Year!

Friday, July 27, 2012

I've decided that it's time I learned French.  I've haven't been to France yet, but, I've been a "francophile" ever since I had my first croissant in the sixth grade.  I studied French with Madame Bigard.  Her accent was spot-on, and, she instilled in us a love of all things French.
I've since learned Spanish, and, along the way; I've lost my French.  In fact, when I started learning Spanish, I spoke it with a French accent.  True story!

I'm going to recapture a part of myself that I've lost.  I'm going to learn French in one year.  I'll chronicle my adventures in French with you as I immerse myself in the culture, music, and food!    Ah...la vie en rose!

Marcella's

Tuesday, July 24, 2012

I decided that I need to take myself out on a date.  I went to Marcella's down in the Short North arts district, and, ordered the pepperoni and cheese, gluten free pizza.

I've tried the gluten free pizza at another restaurant, that will remain nameless.  It was like having someone smear pizza sauce onto a piece of cardboard, add a whisper of mozzarella, and call it pizza.  I had to form a search party to find the pepperoni.

Marcella's, on the other hand, was absolutely delicious.  I ordered the pizza with pepperoni, provolone, asiago, onion, and mozzerella.  The crust was perfect, and; there was a perfect cheese to pepperoni ratio.  I asked for white truffle oil on the side, and; it was like romance on a plate.

The only drawback to this restaurant for some, is, that it is hip and trendy read:  loud.  If you are into that scene, Marcella's is your spot.

If you go to Marcella's, you won't have a quiet evening, but; it will be delicious!

Colors

Sunday, July 22, 2012

This is one of the lamps I fell in love with, from a Lebanese restaurant I visited.  I love all the beautiful colors.  It looks like jewelry, cascading from the ceiling, lit from within.
It's amazing what you can experience, when you observe what's around you.  Being present opens you up to so much.  Take childlike pleasure in life. Once in a while, look up, you never know what beautiful things might be right above you.

The Rules Of Femininity! Lesson 3

Tuesday, July 17, 2012

In today's installment of, The Artistry of Femininity, we learn, that a lady never reveals her age.  I'm not sure why we don't reveal it, but, apparently; I've been unladylike for a long time.  I have two friends, who will not reveal their true age; not even to me.

Being coy is not a strong suit of mine.  I guess it's time to practice.  A lady doesn't have to reveal things about herself that she doesn't wish eg:  Is that your hair?  Are those your real nails?  Is that your real eye color?  The nerve!

We live in an age that doesn't stand for discretion.  Being a lady means, having the courage to politely shut the interlopers down.  With a smile, of course!

Fresh Flowers Are Your Womanly Right

Monday, July 16, 2012

I remember the thrill I got, when my husband surprised me with flowers.  It is totally romantic, for a man to present a woman with a beautiful bouquet of flowers.
After my husband died, I thought my days of wine and roses were over.  NOT TRUE!  It took a while, but, I finally realized that he did what he could; when he could.  Now, it was up to me, to make me happy.
One of the things that I've observed, is that, many woman don't buy flowers for themselves.  Travesty!  Understand that fresh flowers are your right.  Every woman should enjoy the delight of freshly cut flowers.
No, I don't mean enjoying the potted plants you have in your house.  Potted plants have their place, but, I'm talking about a bouquet.  Choose a bouquet that bursts with a riot of color, or whispers subtly to you.  Darling, pick whatever suits your personality, or your mood.
A bouquet doesn't need to be expensive.  If you think you can't afford such frivolity, save a few calories, and forgo your Starbuck's latte a few times.  Romance yourself, and, indulge in a bouquet.

Tea Is Life

Sunday, July 15, 2012

Weekends are not supposed to be stressful.  This weekend was extremely oppressive, so, apparently; it didn't get the memo.

I once learned from a wise woman, that, when life is stressful; a woman has to learn to take time for herself.  Frankly, I never really believed that.

I believed that you were supposed to be Supermom.  Women are supposed to work the heck out of their careers, come home and cook dinner every night, afterward; helping the kids with their calculus homework.  Therefore, if I come home, exhausted from my day, and lop over on the couch; I'm a loser.  That's insane.  But, every time I try to take time for myself, I feel so guilty; like I'm being naughty.

This does not feel good.  What's missing is balance.  Yes, woman can work hard, but; we also need to know when enough is enough.

Today, I'd had enough.  You see, we buried a dear friend yesterday.  In true mommy fashion, I didn't want to cry too much in front of the kids; no sense in upsetting them.  So, I stoically held it all in, and; put up a brave face.

However, today, I finally had time to process my feelings.  With a little time to myself, I cried and cried, till I was exhausted.  I got some rest, and I drank...tea.

I had a lovely cup of Earl Grey tea.  It must be the bergamot, that takes an ordinary tea, into a completely different stratosphere.  I love the bouquet, and, the taste; especially when I use that outrageously delicious Honey Love from Mockingbird Meadows.  http://www.mockingbirdmeadows.com/

Darlings, whatever tea you like, take the time to sip it slowly.  Decompress, and try to concentrate on anything but your stress.  I've found that focusing on my breathing,  quiets my stress.  Focus on each breath, and, your lovely cup of hot tea.  Now, whenever you are feeling overwhelmed, repeat that exercise, until it becomes second nature.  Tea is life, drink it in.

The Poetry Of It All

Thursday, July 12, 2012

Have you ever met someone, who captivates you?  A person dripping with refinement, who can spout sonnets, and poetry like The Bard himself?  I haven't, but, I saw a guy like that in a movie once.

I would love to meet someone like that.  However, more than that, I would like to be that person.  Be the person you want to know.  If that person doesn't exist, create them.  It's never to late to be someone new and fabulous!

It's funny that I know all the lyrics to the Barney theme song, but I don't know any verses of poetry.  To live luxuriously darlings, we must be well rounded.  I intend to share the poetry I love with you.  Let me know what you think.  Ciao!

Go From Me - Sonnets From the Portuguese - Elizabeth Barrett Brown

Go from me. Yet I feel that I shall stand
Henceforward in thy shadow. Nevermore
Alone upon the threshold of my door
Of individual life, I shall command
The uses of my soul, nor lift my hand
Serenely in the sunshine as before,
Without the sense of that which I forbore, ..
Thy touch upon the palm. The widest land
Doom takes to part us, leaves thy heart in mine
With pulses that beat double. What I do
And what I dream include thee, as the wine
Must taste of its own grapes. And when I sue
God for myself, He hears that name of thine,
And sees within my eyes, the tears of two.

Crystal

Wednesday, July 11, 2012

What is it about crystal that's makes me love it so much?

I went to our Victorian Village neighborhood yard sale, and; found a perfect crystal coupe champagne glass.  There was only one, but I didn't care.  I saw, I grabbed, I paid; I conquered!

I carried the beautiful glass like a newborn baby, relieved when I reached my car; crystal in tact.

I'm determined to take the time to search out beautiful things.  You should do the same, and, don't worry; your lovely things don't always have to match.

Make sure that once you've found your beautiful treasures; you use them.  Darlings, don't forget, life is a celebration.  Live luxuriously!

The Rules Of Femininity! Lesson 2

Tuesday, July 10, 2012

Here's our next lesson on the artistry of femininity.  I found out that being ladylike, means not arriving late.  Ouch! I'm not sure about that one!  I always thought that arriving fashionably late, was a simply how things were done.  Apparently, I'm totally wrong.

Now instead of feeling harried, and, rushed; I can arrive a little early.  I will calmly sit down, cross my legs, and; feel smug as others are throwing out their excuses for intruding upon my time with their tardiness.  Love it!

I've also learned that when you are given a compliment, you don't downplay the compliment by pointing out your flaws.  Enjoy it. Take the compliment diva!
Love you madly darlings!

Gluten Free

Thursday, July 5, 2012

I'm always on the lookout for amazing gluten free food.  Stay tuned for more on one of my new favorites, Patisserie Lallier.

Visit them at the Franklin Park Farmers Market.  Be sure to try their delicious Pave aux Amandes - delicate, sweet almond cake!

Xica Chic

Wednesday, July 4, 2012

I went for a visit to the home of my friends Anita and Reynaldo.  Anita is the editor-in-chief of Xica Magazine, and; I absolutely love her style.
Stepping into her house was like stepping into a Turkish bazaar.  Every gorgeous piece in her home has a story.  The vase picked up in Argentina, or, the ornate Moroccan punched lamp.
I love that Anita's home is minimal, not fussy. She has just what she needs, and, the pieces she has; please her immensely.
Let's contrast with my home. It's a hodgepodge of things that are practical, but are in no way pleasing.  Ok, frankly my furniture is a psychotic mixup of stuff I've dragged from one home to the next.
I'm taking my queue from Anita.   I am now purging, whatever doesn't please me. I'm going to make my house mine. I'll keep you posted on my adventures in redecorating.  Ciao!

The rules of femininity! - Lesson 1

Sunday, July 1, 2012

Darlings, to live luxuriously, we have to learn how to be feminine.   Lesson 1 - Always speak about others, as if they are present.  Never point out a friend's imperfections to others.

The Blonde Effect

Thursday, June 28, 2012

I recently decided that I needed to be a blonde.  I call it my "one third-life crisis" hair.  One woman I know, said, that when she went blonde; she seemed more approachable to others.

I was hesistant to believe that until today.  I am getting more genuinely, pleasant smiles, and hello's than ever.  So let me get this straight.  I have missed out on the effect of blonde all my life?!  I'm wringing my hands with delight in my new found powers.

I will try to use these blonde powers for good and not evil.  But, who knows?

Who needs men, when you can have chocolate!

Wednesday, June 27, 2012

I love chocolate!  I don't care if it's cake, pie, ice cream, or lozenges.  I once found a little chocolate shop that had chocolate covered bacon!  All that delicious, artery clogging bacon, was enrobed in a dark, velvety chocolate.  It sounds weird.  It tastes amazing.  The salty smokiness of the bacon is a perfect foil for the slight bitterness of the dark chocolate.

Now, darlings, when I say I love chocolate; I do not mean Hershey!  No offense intended, but when I need a chocolate rush; I go for the good stuff.  I love to go to Godiva and get a little ballotin of chocolates.  Godiva is so rich, I only need one, or two; which is great for my thighs!

Sometimes, I'll go get my favorite frozen treat in the world; frozen custard from Culvers.  If you go get something that is delicious, and sinfully decadent; you don't need alot.  Rule number #8782379: Don't settle, with men, or; with chocolate.  Love ya!

Whew - that was close!

Tuesday, June 26, 2012

On the way to a wedding reception, some family members, and a dear friend, were involved in a very serious car accident.  They are bumped, and bruised, but; they are all okay.

Moments like these, help us to realign our thinking.  This is why, it is important to live beautifully.  Surround yourself with new experiences, old friends, new friends, and love.  I'm not talking about romantic love.  Romance may come or not.  I'm talking about having the courage to love yourself, in spite of your flaws, in spite of your past; in spite of everyone who says you don't deserve it.

Remove the veil from your life, and be brave.  Tap into your courage and don't settle for an ordinary life.  That doesn't mean go bungee jumping, or cave diving.  It means having the courage to squeeze the juice out of life.

Erma Bombeck said that if she had her life to live all over again, she would do a few things differently, she states:
  • "I would have cried and laughed less while watching television, and more while watching life.
  • When my kids kissed me impetuously, I would never have said, "Later. Now go get washed up for dinner."
  • There would have been more "I love you's and more I'm sorry's."
  • But mostly, given another shot at life, I would seize every minute, look at it and really see it...and never give it back."

Darlings, don't arrive at the end of your life with regret.  Make the precious moments of your life count.

Hot day? Get a pretty fan.

Friday, June 22, 2012

Are you one of those women, that uses scraps of paper to fan themselves, when it's hot outside?  I am!  I confess, that in the past, I have been known to grab junk mail, a magazine; or even a paper plate.  I don't do heat!

However, I'm sure that no self respecting diva would be caught dead, sweating like a horse, her makeup running, and waving a dixie paper plate.  Darlings, it's is simply not done.

This summer, I am bringing back the hand fan.  Fans were like the sun glasses of old, because, you could use them to hide from the paparazzi, as you were getting in an out of your carriage.

Fans were also, an elegant way of discreetly getting your point across.  Whether you were feeling shy, or flirtatious, you could let the world know; without a word.

My reasons are little more practical.  I want to be cute, while staving off the heat.  Back away from the paper plates, and get yourself a grown-up girl fan.

Get that gorgeous fan by clicking here:  http://www.etsy.com/shop/IndigoDaisyWeddings?section_id=6542361

Pho

Thursday, June 21, 2012

This is something you've got to try.  Pho is a Vietnamese soup of rice noodles in a light, subtle broth.  My pho had pork, with green onions, and mushrooms.  When you get your bowl of soup, you add bean sprouts, basil leaves, sriracha sauce, soy sauce and a squeeze of lime.

Since you may not be getting over to Vietnam anytime soon, take a culinary vacation instead!

Hot Sauce

Wednesday, June 20, 2012

I absolutely love farmer's markets; they make summertime so festive.  Last week, I met Mr. Taylor of, Taylor's Original Hott (yes two t's) Pepper Sauce, and his grandsons; Emanuel and Devon.  I looked at the table, full of jars of their sauce; and wondered how good it was.  Emanuel and Devon's sweet, innocent smiles, gave no indication about how insidiously hot their sauce is.

It is actually more of a chutney, made with habenero peppers.  It starts with a delightful, slightly sweet taste, and has a nice warm afterburn on the finish.

Ok, so now I'm hooked.  I am now putting this product, on all my food.  If you want some bottled Trinidadian fire in a jar, contact Mr. Taylor here:  http://www.taylorspeppersauce.com/index.html

Beautify your bed

Tuesday, June 19, 2012

Everytime I look at this picture, I feel calm.  It reminds me of a beautiful song - Concert Grand Satie by Erik Satie.

I think beds should be beautifully made, with soft, comfortable linens.  The sheets should smell soothing like lavender, or bright and sunny like lemongrass.

I know what you're thinking.  You're thinking that you can't remember how long it's been since you bought new sheets, or, heaven forbid; since you last changed them.

Go to a store like TJMaxx or Marshalls, and find some beautiful, inexpensive bed linens. Single ply sheets are the softest.

Darlings, if you haven't changed your sheets in a while, you might get your diva card revoked.  So get right on that - Au revoir!

Feli's Makeup Kit - MAC LiquidLast Eyeliner

Monday, June 18, 2012

I love being a girl!  I've always loved putting on makeup.  I wasn't allowed to officially start wearing makeup outside of the house, until I was 16.  Boy, did I wear it: three different eye shadow colors (simultaneously), foundation, blush, lip liner, eye liner, mascara, brow gel, the works.  That was just my daytime look.  I was fierce, or; so I thought.

Now, I have no time for complicated beauty routines.   Isn't that weird.  When you're young, you go through all that fuss; slathering on tons of product.  Then, when you get older, and you need a little extra product, you don't want to bother.  Oh, well!

I love products that I can apply in the morning, and, not think about all day.  I always forget to reapply, and end up looking crazy by the end of the day.

Darlings, you've got to get Liquidlast by MAC, it's amazing!  You can pick some up at the MAC counter for $18.50.  Okay, I can hear the collective gasp, but; this product is worth every penny.

Why?  Because this eyeliner is like a tattoo.  It wears all day!    Why spend $7 on an eyeliner that smudges, melts, or flakes off; when you can spend $18.50 for a product that you need a sandblaster to remove.  Granted, you will want to make sure you pick up eye make up remover, (no tugging at the eyes allowed).  MAC has a great remover for $10.

Get products that work as hard as you do, so you can flip your hair, and look luscious all day!

One on One

Friday, June 15, 2012

I love mornings.  Early morning has a dewy magic that I rarely experience.  Why? Because I'm usually obstinately unconscious, trying to eek out the last bit of precious sleep I can.

Some days, however, it's nice to wake up early.  I like to steal away to my favorite morning spot, and, have a cafe au lait and pastry with one of my daughters.

It's always a challenge when there is one parent, with two kids.  Because the single parent may be out numbered, my solution; is to have one on one time with each child.

During our "date time", as we like to call it, we have the most amazing conversations.  My children appreciate, that, what they say is in confidence, and out of earshot of their curious (read nosey) sibling.  Sometimes, we don't have to talk at all; it's just nice to have quiet time together.  It all goes too fast, so don't forget to slow life down.

Grown-up Parties

Thursday, June 14, 2012

I went to a wine and cheese at my bud Adam's house, and; I had a wonderful time.  It was just the kind of party that kids hate.  My kids call it an, "Old People's Party", with adults just standing around talking; and laughing.  Of course, when you're twelve, everyone is "Old People".  At this party, there were no jeans, party games, or technicolor cakes.  Just an opportunity to not be, rushed, harried, hassled, or cajoled.

Don't get me wrong, I love kid things.  I just went to a great party, complete with glow sticks and face cake!  But sometimes, a grown up needs an Old People's Party, to make it all better.  Long Live the Old People! Literally.
